Have you met Jemila Abdulai ?
A journalist and social media activist, Jemila Abdulai is passionate about issues related to economic development, global affairs and the media. Born in Nigeria to a mother and father from Tamale and Yendi respectively, she attended Alsyd Academy and Wesley Girls’ MH News international section and managed a team of 25 editors; she regards this period as the start of her journalistic career. After securing a Bachelor of Arts honors degree in both Economics and French, Jemila moved to Washington, DC to work as a correspondent with the Development Executive Group (Devex). In this role, she wrote and published over 30 news, career and business articles on development, and interviewed high-level development professionals like Harriet Fulbright and former UNIFEM head Ines Alberdi.
As the program coordinator for AWOMI, an NGO based in Senegal, Jemila spearheaded the organization of the 3rd Annual Young Women’s Knowledge & Leadership Institute (YOWLI) in Dakar, as well as the first ever YOWLI Monologues event during the UN’s 2011 Commission on the Status of Women in New York. An ardent believer in the value of information and cross-cultural sharing, she is an active blogger who regularly updates her personal site Circumspecte.com, and is also a member of innovative projects like Ghanablogging, BarCamp Ghana and LifestylzGH. A fluent French speaker, Jemila enjoys listening to music, reading, writing, traveling and meeting new people.
